The Masseys Aboard Snowcat
Welcome to Life in the Boat! We're Dean and Karen Massey, and we live in Steamboat Springs, Colorado -- locals just call it "The Boat." We're here to share stories from our sailing life and the mountain town that keeps pulling us back.
Before settling in Steamboat in 2005, we spent four years living aboard a sailboat with our twin sons, Jackson and Ben. We logged more than 15,000 miles on our 43-foot Catana catamaran, Snowcat. We sailed the Mediterranean, across the Atlantic, then up through the Caribbean and the U.S. East Coast. We ended our voyage in the Western Caribbean -- Honduras, Belize and Guatemala.
When we moved back to Colorado, we knew we weren't city people anymore. Steamboat Springs felt right from the start. Dean became a high school science teacher and Karen continued her career as a dietitian working for Colorado State University Extension.
In 2016 we bought our second catamaran, a Balance 451 we named Snowcat II, naturally. This time, it was just the two of us - and we took things slow. We enjoyed exploring the Chesapeake and investigating the coastal towns along the Intracoastal Waterway. Best of all, we spent winters cruising in the Bahamas.
In 2022 we sold Snowcat II and bought a Sprinter van. We now continue our adventures on land, enjoying life in The Boat and camping with our faithful Golden Retriever, Obiwan.
